Art & Design
We recognise the huge importance of engaging in art, craft and design as a way of expressing oneself and being creative. We want children to experiment, invent and create their own works. We also want them to observe and discuss the work of artists from different time periods, including modern artists. This can provide stimuli and inspiration for their own work.
At Ewhurst, we recognise that everyone is an artist and can create work that is pleasing to look at or makes others think. Children are given opportunities to draw, paint and create sculptures. They work individually and in groups. They use paper, paint, pastels, chalk, clay and fabrics.
In EYFS we follow the EYFS curriculum/Development Matters and in Key Stage One, we follow the National Curriculum.
In Art and Design, children study under the four areas:
Drawing including observational drawings
Painting and mixed media
Craft and design
Sculpture and 3D creation.
Units of work include the elements of generating ideas, practising and making, evaluating and analysing and gaining a knowledge of the work of artists.
Children will learn substantive knowledge of the Art and Design curriculum. This includes the practical knowledge of method and techniques, media and materials and formal elements (line, tone, shape, colour, form, pattern, texture.) It also includes the theoretical knowledge of the history of art through looking at the work of artists. They consider the meaning and interpretations behind works of art that they study as well as exploring artists’ materials and processes.
Children also learn and acquire the disciplinary knowledge to help them understand the subject as a discipline. They explore questions such as “What is art?” and “Why do people make art?”
At Ewhurst, in EYFS, children learn through the areas of Expressive Arts. In Key Stage One, children follow the Kapow scheme, where four topics are studied each year.
