Geography

At Ewhurst, children have a curiosity about the world around them and its people.  They have opportunities to learn about the local area by exploring, going for walks and conducting fieldwork and gaining first had experience in Forest School.  They are also taught of the importance of community and about the village where the school is set.

Being a school where children are encouraged to read, children’s experiences are broadened through both fiction and non-fiction.  They ask questions and are keen to gain a growing understanding of the world beyond our small village.

In EYFS we follow the EYFS curriculum/Development Matters and in Key Stage One, we follow the National Curriculum.

The National Curriculum organises the attainment targets for Geography under

Locational knowledge

Place knowledge

Human and physical geography

Geographical skills and fieldwork

and so we have planned our Geography curriculum with these strands running through each and every unit.

Children will learn substantive knowledge of the Geography curriculum:  the recognised knowledge of the world and the human and physical process that affect the people and environments within it. They will also gain disciplinary knowledge, learning how to find answers to enquiry questions and collect, analyse and communicate geographical information.

At Ewhurst, in EYFS, children learn through the two areas of understanding of the world and people, culture and communities.  In Key Stage One, children follow the Kapow scheme, where three topics are studied each year.
