Design & Technology

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as maths, science and art.  Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful and innovative.

Katja – I would like to say I composed this!  I didn’t.

At Ewhurst, children are taught the building blocks of design and technology through designated lessons.   They have further opportunities to extend, improve and experiment their skills within the outdoor classrooms.   They follow a planning cycle of research, design, make and evaluate along with learning technical knowledge.

In EYFS we follow the EYFS curriculum/Development Matters and in Key Stage One, we follow the National Curriculum.

The curriculum is split into the four key technical areas:

Cooking and nutrition

Mechanisms and Mechanical systems

Structures

Textiles.

At Ewhurst, in EYFS, children learn through Expressive Art and Design elements of the EYFS curriculum.  In Key Stage One, children follow the Kapow scheme, where five topics are studied each year.
