PE

We recognise the importance of fitness and developing an active and healthy lifestyle from an early age.  Children are encouraged to be active, whether it be in lessons, at playtime, in the wider curriculum and at home.

In PE lessons, we offer the children an extensive range of activities to develop their fundamental movement skills so they become increasingly competent and confident.  We give them opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.  They also develop team working skills in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

At Ewhurst, our curriculum provides a range of high-quality opportunities.

Teacher based lesson: gymnastics or dance, including maypole dancing in the summer.

Sports Stars lessons:  Led by an outside and highly skilled coach and often focussed on ball skills, developing attacking and defending skills.  Athletics skills are also taught.

Swimming lessons: led by qualified staff and making use of our outside pool in the summer term.

Outdoor and Adventurous Activities: As part of our Forest School program, children take part in a range of physically based activities.

We teach PE in this way as it develops

  • broad skills that can be built on.
  • skills and stamina for movement
  • a love for being active
  • links to other subjects
  • understanding of the impact of activity on the body
  • a broad range of activities including swimming, outdoor learning, maypole dancing.

In EYFS we follow the Physical Development elements of the EYFS curriculum/Development Matters and in Key Stage One, we follow the National Curriculum.  A range of resources is used to support this.
