Mathematics

At Ewhurst our aim is for children to be fluent mathematically, to be able to reason mathematically and to apply maths to problem solving. We provide children with a range of mathematical skills and experiences throughout their time with us, in the form of practical and creative maths to problem solving embedded in the real world.

We aim, in our teaching of Mathematics, to develop children's understanding of number, measurement, geometry and statistics, and to make mathematics an enjoyable, worthwhile and relevant experience for all our pupils.  In order to achieve this, we shall promote a positive attitude towards mathematics by

• posing questions that deepen children’s understanding
• providing children with progressive mathematical vocabulary
• fostering the confidence to tackle mathematical problems independently
• developing a knowledge and understanding of mathematics to master a wide range of concept
• providing children with access to the number system using place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
• promoting confidence and competence with mathematics
• developing the ability to solve number problems and apply the necessary skills
• providing a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered by counting and measuring
• providing differentiated activities to allow all children equal access to the curriculum
• encouraging independence and allow children to self-select resources
• asking children to explain and reason mathematically

The children will:

• use and apply their knowledge of maths across the whole curriculum and in the real world
• have a sense of the size of a number and where it fits in the number system
• know by heart number facts such as number bonds, doubles and halves
• use what they know to work out answers mentally
• explain their methods and reasoning
• become familiar with mathematical vocabulary
• suggest suitable units for measuring, and make sensible estimates
• self select resources and operations

Strategies for Teaching and Learning

The teaching and learning of Mathematics is taught through the mastery approach, ensuring the five strands are part of learning. Lessons are planned using Development Matters in EYFS and drawing on the White Rose scheme of work to teach the National Curriculum in KS1. To add to this and to make their learning more meaningful, we aim for the children to experience their learning through practical activities and investigations that can be incorporated in ‘independent learning’ activities. Teachers and LSA’s pose meaningful questions to deepen children’s understanding and challenge thinking.

Fluency is developed in each maths lessons, using a range of resources including Mastery in Number. To develop a concrete, visual, abstract approach, children are taught to use a wide range of resources and visual representations to support learning and understanding. They are encouraged to explain their reasoning and apply concepts to everyday life and to solve problems. Misunderstandings are addressed when possible to ensure a secure foundation.
