Healthy Schools

Having originally received our 'Healthy Schools Award' in 2006, our Healthy Schools - Enhanced Status in March 2014, and our Silver Award in Autumn 2017, we were thrilled to have been awarded the Gold Award in February 2019. Staff, children and parents are continually developing ideas to improve the school's and the children's healthy approach to life.   The Award has now been discontinued by Surrey but we continue to be actively engaged in developing a Surrey Healthy Schools Approach.  This includes attending training and completing a through self-evaluation in a wide range of areas related to healthy living, including healthy eating and emotional and mental well-being.

To gain our award in 2019 we initiated the following:

  • Reviewing the PSED curriculum
  • Regularly updating relevant school policies
  • Curriculum Workshops for parents, including a Growth Mindset focus
  • Growth Mindset questionnaires for the whole school community - pupils, parents, staff and governors - in September 2017 and again in July 2018, when the positive difference was analysed and reviewed
  • Characteristics of Learning observations of six children in each year group in September 2017 and July 2018 to look for improvements in Growth Mindset
  • Characteristics of Learning grid to be trialled during the year in Year R
  • Gymnastics training
  • A 'Feeling Good' Week
  • School Council organising a vote for a different 'healthy meal' to be added to our lunch menu
  • New trim trail opened October 2018

Feeling Good Week 2023

As part of 'Feeling Good' week this year, and in line with our PSED (Personal, Social and Emotional Development curriculum) the children enjoyed:

  • A whole school trip to Sayers Croft - Outdoor Activity Centre
  • A skipping workshop for all age groups
  • A Pet Service held in the Rectory garden
  • Class-based PSED activities throughout the week
  • Family activity given to all classes to promote self-esteem

We will repeat this event with different activities for the children in 2024.

Healthy Breakfast

This PTA-organised activity took place on the morning of Sports Day in July 2023, and was a very popular and successful event.  Local supermarkets donated most the food for the meal, which was also open to siblings who did not attend the school.  The children enjoyed different types of cereal, including porridge, yoghurt, fruit, bagels and toast.

PE

Physical activity plays a major part in school life to promote physical and mental wellbeing across both the curriculum and the school day.  Healthy, active children are at the heart of our Active philosophy.  We promote the difference between physical education, school sport, and physical activity, enabling all children to feel included and successful.  Our PE curriculum is based on the fundamental skills of balance, coordination and agility, and we promote healthy competition, encouraging the children to achieve their personal best. Our aim is for all children to leave with excellent physical literacy and a culture of physical activity to support them throughout life.

We are fortunate enough to have our own swimming pool, and the children have two swimming lessons per week in the second half of the summer term.  They are divided into separate groups according to levels of ability (according to parent feedback) so the lessons are of maximum value.

Children also enjoy sporting activities in curriculum and non-curriculum areas such as hockey, athletics, dance and gymnastic lessons.  Our annual Sports Day rounds off the sporting year for the children.

In Years 1 and 2 the children are taught multi skills by a coach from the Sports Stars on a Tuesday afternoon. Reception class can start in the Spring term. They play fun and exciting games, and learn new exercise skills whilst being encouraged to stay fit and healthy.  Sport Stars also run one of our after school clubs on a Tuesday from 3.00 - 4.00pm, teaching the same multi skills.  All the coaches are fully trained, have DBS checks and First Aid experience.
